12 – Remember Us

Battle in the Central Grove

The confrontation with Seradin began in the subterranean heart of the Central Grove, where the villain lounged in his swivel chair with an air of theatrical menace. He taunted the party with cryptic questions about the wisdom stored in forest roots and the memories he had been harvesting, refusing to reveal exactly which memory he sought, citing their lack of clearance. When Krish pressed him further, Seradin’s patience snapped — he slammed a button on his desk, and a massive tree root swept across the chamber like a scythe, catching Sabra’s foot and tearing something invisible from the party’s minds. In an instant, they found themselves staring at the friendship stones around their necks with no idea why they carried them or who had given them. The theft was so seamless they didn’t even know it had happened.

Combat erupted immediately, with Krish charging forward to strike the first blow while Seradin retaliated with a blast of dark energy that rattled the room. Quinlan maneuvered through the chaos, dodging a retaliatory strike to close the distance and fire a warning shot that left Seradin visibly shaken, then followed it up with a burst of light-infused magic that scorched the villain. Seradin attempted to seize Quinlan and drag him to the ground, but Quinlan slipped free of his grasp with ease. Vien called down a thunderbolt that crackled through the chamber and struck Seradin with tremendous force, while Sabra held the line with her shields, intercepting blows meant for her allies.

The Tide Turns

Seradin proved to be a far more insidious opponent than his theatrical entrance suggested. Rather than simply trading blows, he reached into the minds of the party’s shaken members and bent their wills against one another, forcing Krish to swing at Quinlan, Vien to strike at Sabra, and Quinlan to turn his own magic against Vien. Each forced attack was a small cruelty layered atop the larger battle, and Seradin seemed to take a quiet satisfaction in watching friends wound each other. He also drained the party’s resources with a malicious hunger, consuming their supplies as though savoring each one. Quinlan manipulated the flow of time itself to slow Seradin’s movements in retaliation, and Vien worked tirelessly to heal the wounds that kept accumulating across the group.

Amidst the chaos of the battle, the chamber filled with phantasmal apparitions — ghostly scenes from the party’s pasts crowding the battlefield like uninvited guests. Krish saw destroyed villages, Sabra glimpsed memories of the circus, Vien was confronted with images from Lux Arcanum, and Quinlan saw himself training with his old mentor Fernath. It was through this cacophony of visions that Vien spotted something extraordinary: a forest larger than anything in Dhruv, with an impossible city jutting from its center, bathed in white light. He caught Seradin watching the same vision with a glint of hunger in his eye, and in that moment, Vien understood exactly what memory the villain had been hunting for all along.

The Fall of Seradin

The battle ground on with brutal persistence, Seradin striking hard and the party weathering each blow through sheer determination and the healing hands of Vien. Quinlan was pushed to the edge of his endurance, and Sabra stood as an unyielding wall between her companions and destruction. Then Krish surged forward and delivered a final, crushing blow — Seradin’s jaw spun in slow motion as he whipped around and crumpled to the floor in a heap, the fight at last concluded. The party wasted no time: they stripped the mask from Seradin’s face, bound him, and handed him over to the palace guards to be taken to the dungeon.

With Seradin subdued, Quinlan turned his attention to the massive machine that had been leeching wisdom from the roots of the ancient trees. A glowing pane on the device presented three riddles in sequence, each one probing the nature of history, foresight, and memory. The party worked through them with sharp minds, and as the final answer was spoken aloud, the machine began to crumble apart on its own. The tree roots that had been stretched and twisted into the contraption snapped back to their natural forms with a violent whiplash, and a blinding explosion of light filled the chamber. When the brilliance faded, stolen memories came rushing back — including the face and name of the man who had given them their friendship stones: Chris Anthemum.

The Harmonic of Memory

At the base of the ruined machine lay the Harmonic of Memory. Krish reached out and took it, and the moment his fingers closed around it, a shared vision swept over the entire party. They heard the forest first — millions of trees whispering truths to one another in a vast, overlapping chorus — before a single voice rose above the rest and said simply, “Remember us.” The vision shifted, and the darkness gave way to golden light, revealing a city of tall white spires and ringing bells. Vien recognized it immediately: the Radiant Seat. The party now held four of the five harmonics they needed, and the fifth almost certainly waited for them there.

Reunion and Revelations

The journey back to the palace brought an unexpected reunion with Han, Krish’s old mentor, who looked remarkably healthier than he had just hours before — still older than Krish remembered, but no longer by thirty years. Han made a dry joke about finally having a face old enough to order a drink without being questioned, then turned serious, revealing that the first Shattered Will operatives to arrive in the capital had included individuals who bore a striking resemblance to Quinlan’s brother and Sabra’s eldest sister. He described how the cult had once been little more than a harmless community group — a book club, a neighborhood cleanup crew — before Seradin’s arrival transformed it into something focused and dangerous. The news of their siblings’ involvement settled over Quinlan and Sabra like a cold fog.

At the palace, the Queen of Dhruv greeted them with clear eyes and a restored memory, the fog of Seradin’s influence entirely lifted. She confirmed she had written the urgent letter that had called Krish home, and explained that the strange tree-call he had experienced was likely the forest’s way of reaching out through the memories it had been holding. In gratitude for what the party had done for Dhruv and its people, she ordered a grand banquet laid out in their honor, with food and supplies enough to restore everyone’s strength. She also promised them the use of Dhruv’s finest war elephants for the road ahead.

Interrogation in the Dungeon

Before departing, the party descended to the dungeon to speak with the three captured cultists — Fessik, Iningo, and Montoya — who sat in their cells looking hollow and dejected. They spoke of joining the Shattered Will for community and belonging, describing a group that had once felt like an MLM with good intentions, until Seradin arrived and made obedience feel like the only natural thing in the world. They confirmed that the Muted Herald, the true leader of the Shattered Will, was almost certainly waiting at the Radiant Seat — and that the party’s faces were plastered on wanted posters distributed by the Herald’s hand. When the party went to verify that Seradin was securely locked away, they found his cell empty, the guards with no memory of him ever arriving. He had vanished without a trace.

Revelations and Departure

Vien, meanwhile, recovered a stolen memory of his own: Sabra’s eldest sister had once been a student at Lux Arcanum, two grades ahead of him, before she dropped out to join the Shattered Will. The revelation stunned Sabra, who had known her sister had disappeared but never imagined she had been at the same academy as one of her closest companions. With this new thread woven into the larger tapestry of their quest, the party climbed onto their war elephants and rode out from the capital of Llerrum. The city was alive again — people filling the streets, the trees having released those they had sheltered from the Shattered Will’s reach. As the elephants carried them toward the horizon, a white-robed figure was spotted sprinting toward the Radiant Seat at an impossible speed, far outpacing even the great beasts beneath them. Whatever waited at the Radiant Seat, something was already moving to get there first.
